Adkins was the daughter of a young single mother, raised in various working-class London areas. She was a lover of popular music of the present as a child , and was able to play the clarinet and guitar. However, it was not until her early teens, when she was introduced to the blues-based rhythm singer Etta James and other mid 20th century performers, that she began to consider pursuing a career in music. While she was honed in her skills at a school that was funded by the government for the performing arts an acquaintance began uploading songs Adkins composed and recorded on the social networking site Myspace. Her music eventually attracted the attention of recording labels and, in 2006 shortly after her graduation, she signed a contract with XL Recordings.
